Dry Eye Treatment
INSIDE A Medical Eye Exam
THE BASICS
WHAT IS DRY EYE?
Our vision and eye health depend on our tear film, which is made up of three layers: a mucin layer, a water layer, and an oil layer.
Some of us do not make enough aqueous tears for the water layer, and many of us do not make enough lipid tears for the oil layer of the tear film — which results in dry eye disease.
Three layers work together to keep the eye’s surface healthy.

DRY EYE TREATMENT FAQS
Curious about what dry eye treatment entails at Lake Lanier Eye Care? You’re not alone — here are the questions we’re asked most often.
Is dry eye a permanent condition?
Can untreated dry eye harm my eyes?
Will over-the-counter eye drops fix my dry eye?
Artificial tears can ease mild symptoms temporarily, but they don’t address the underlying cause — such as blocked oil glands that keep the tear film from working properly. Treatments that target the root of the problem, like clearing and reactivating those glands, tend to provide much longer-lasting relief.
Does screen time make dry eye worse?
Yes. We tend to blink far less when looking at computers, phones, and other digital devices, which lets the tear film dry out. Frequent screen use is one of the most common contributors to dry eye — taking regular breaks to rest and blink can make a real difference.
